Bath is a city in the South West of England with a population of about 84,000, situated 156km west of London. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city is the principal centre of the Bath and North East Somerset authority, which has a population of 170,000.

Bath was founded by the Romans in AD43, around the only naturally occurring hot springs in the United Kingdom, and was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590. In Georgian times (18th century) the City became popular as a spa resort, and major expansion left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath stone. The city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Bath has a variety of theatres, museums and other cultural and sporting venues which, together with the city's baths and Georgian heritage, have helped to make it a major centre for tourism. Over one million overnight visitors and 3.8 million day visitors come to the city each year.

There is a large service sector and growing communication, creative and information technology industries, providing employment for the population of Bath and the surrounding area.

Through the CIVITAS Renaissance initiative, 10 measures will be delivered in the City of Bath by Bath & North East Somerset Council and partners including ACIS, ATS, Bicincittà, City Car Club, DHL, First, Powabyke and the University of the West of England.
